Using the Internet--Converting an Instructional Video to the MP3 Format

If you would like to convert a video such as a tutorial on a particular subject, to the MP3 file format to be played on any portable player, here's how.

1. Open www.youtube.com.
2. Type the subject of the video and press Enter.
3. If possible, pause the video.
4. Press Alt-D to move to the Address Bar or click in the Address Bar.
5 Press Control-C to Copy the URL.
6. Open www.youtube-mp3.org.
7. Mouse users click in the Edit field containing the sample URL.
8. If the url is not highlighted, press Control-A to select the entire URL followed by the Delete key.
9. Press Control-V to paste a copy of your URL there.
10. Tab to the Convert Video button and press Enter or Click on it.
The conversion process should begin.
Hopefully, you will receive an alert that the video has been successfully converted
12. Click on the Download link. Save the mp3 file.
13. Click on the Open button to hear the video or Click on the Open Folder button to open the folder where the mp3 file has been saved.

you can now copy this file to an mp3 player or USB drive.

Using the Internet - Notes for Session 4

Adding home pages to your Internet Browser Startup:
1. Open the Internet Explorer.
2. Press Alt-T to open the Tools menu or Click on the Tools Menu.
3. Use the Up Arrow to move to the Internet Options option. You can also Click on the Internet Options option.
4. You are in the edit field where you can type the URL of the websites or web pages you would like to add.
Example: http://www.freedictionary.com
Enter after each address you type. When done, press Shift-Tab to the Apply button and press Enter followed by pressing Shift-Tab to the OK button and press Enter. If you're using a mouse, you can Click on the Apply button followed by Clicking on the OK button.

To move from page to page, press Control-Tab key or use the Mouse to Click on the Name of the website/page. Website names are generally located under the Menu Bar (File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, Help).

Copying and Pasting text from the Internet to a Word Document:
1. Use the Shift-Down Arrow combination or the Mouse highlighting method to select the text.
2. Press Control-C to activate the Copy command. This command is also found in the Edit Menu, which can be accessed by pressing Alt-E and choosing the Copy command or Clicking on the Edit Menu and Clicking on the Copy command.
3. Open MS Word and press Alt-E, S and choose “Unformatted Text”. Your text will take on the formatting of the current document.

Copying and Pasting Web Addresses for use in Emails and Elsewhere:
1. Move to the Address Bar with Alt-D..
2. The address should be highlighted.
3. Press Control-C to activate the Copy command.
4. Compose a New Email Message.
5. Type your message and press Control-V to paste the address there.
6. Send your message as usual.

Example:
1. Open www.youtube.com.
2. type search term(s) for a video. Example: Banana Bread Recipe.
2. click on one of the resulting links.
3. The video will begin playing. Pause it, if you can.
4. Press Alt-D to move to the Address Bar.
5. Press Control-C to activate the Copy command.
6. Open your Gmail account.
7. type the recipien'ts address.
8. Tab to the Subject field and type a brief introductory line.
9. Tab to the Message Body. If you like, type a short message.
10. Press Control-V to paste the URL there.
11. Press the Tab key to move to the Send button and ppress Enter or click on the Send button.

Opening Attachments in Gmail:
1. Open the message containing the attachment.
2. Fine the Scan and Download link and press Enter or Click on it. You can use Control-F and type the word “scan” and Enter. If you’re using MAGic with speech, you can press insert-F7 and press the letter S until you hear the “Scan and Download” link and Enter. You can also find it visually. I understand that it is to the left of the message.
3. A dialog box is displayed. Tab to the Open button and Enter or Click on the Open button. The attachment will open in the application in which it was created.

Saving an Attachment in Gmail:
1. Open the message containing the attachment.
2. Find the Scan and Download link.
3. Once the dialog box opens, Tab to the Save button and press Enter or Click on the Save button. It’s towards the bottom of the dialog box.
4. The Save As dialog box is displayed.
5. Verify the name of the document and the location.
6. Press Alt-S to perform a quick save or Click on the Save button. It is located towards the bottom right of the box.

Inserting an Attachment in Gmail:
1. Press Alt-C, Enter or Click on the Compose link to begin a new message.
2. Type the recipient’s email address; Tab to the Subject edit field and type a Subject for the message.
3. Click on the Browse button. The Choose File dialog box will be displayed.
4. In the Folder/File List, locate the file you want to attach and Enter or Double-Click on it.
5. Tab to the Message Body or Click in the Message Body; type your message and Send as usual by Tabbing to the Send button and pressing Enter or Clicking on the Send button.

Using the Internet -- Notes for Session 2

To access the teacherblog from anywhere in the world:
1. Open the Internet Explorer browser.
2. Press Control-O or Click in the Address Bar.
3. Type teacherblog.livejournal.com and press Enter.

to Send a Shortcut of a Website or a Web page to the Desktop:
1. Press Alt-F or click on the File Menu.
2. use the Down Arrow to locate the Send option and press Enter. You can also mouse down and click on the option.
3. A submenu will be displayed. Press the Right Arrow, Enter or click on the option to open it.
4. Choose the Desktop as Shortcut option by Entering or clicking on it.
6. Check your Desktop by pressing Windows-M or D and typing the letter T. if the first press of the letter T does not take you there, press it again.


To Add A Website or Web page to the Favorites List:
1. Open the website or web page.
2. Press Alt-A or Click on the Favorites Menu.
3. Choose the Add to Favorites option by Entering or Clicking on it.
4. Accept the Name by Tabbing to the Add button and pressing Enter or Click on the Add button.

Verify that the website or web page is there by opening the Favorites List with Alt-A. By default, the most recently added pages are at the bottom of the list, so you can press the Up Arrow to get there quicker.

Method 2:
1. Open the website or web page.
2. Press Control-D. A dialog box will be displayed.
3. Accept the name (but you're certainly welcome to change it) by Tabbing to the Add button and presssing Enter or clicking on it.

Changing your Home or Start page:
The Home Page is the website or web page that is displayed when you open your internet browser.
Method 1:
1. Press Alt-T or Click on the Tools menu.
2. Press the Up Arrow to move to the Internet options option and press Enter or click on it.
3. A multi-page dialog box opens and you are in an edit field where you can type a URL (uniform resource locator)
4. Example: http://www.indeed.com
5. Tab to the Apply button and press Enter or click on the Apply button.
6. Tab to the OK button and presspress Enter or Click on the OK button.
7. Close the Internet Explorer by pressing Alt-F4. Reopen the browser. your website or web page should be displayed.
The most common Home or Start page is Google.

In the classroom, you can access the Internet by pressing the Start Menu and either clicking on the Internet option or pressing Enter.

Often, the Internet icon is on the Desktop and you can click on it there or move to the Desktop with Windows-M or D and press the letter I. When you hear the Internet option, you can press Enter.

The Internet is a network (connection) of computers.

In order to access the Internet , you need an ISP (Internet Service Provider)
Verizon, Time Warner, Optimum Online, Comcast, etc. are examples of internet service providers.

The World Wide Web (www) is the most vibrant part of the Internet today.

Entities are given domain names such as
Amazon or Wikipedia.com (commercial)
Baruch.edu education
Lighthouse.org (not-for-profit)
White House or Nlsbard.loc.gov (governmental
The address for a website is known as a URL (Uniform Resource Locator)

To open a website, press Control-O, type the address and press Enter.
Example: gmail.com
It is not generally necessary to type the 3 w’s. However, if you are having difficulty opening the page, do so.
Gmail is a popular web-based e-mail service.
In HTML view, you can…
Press Alt-C, Enter to Access the Compose link to begin writing a new message.

Press Alt-I, Enter to access the Inbox to see your list of messages.

Mouse users can click on the compose link to write a new message.
Click on the Inbox link to return to the Inbox.

To compose a Message:
1. Click on the compose link or press Alt-C, Enter.
2. type the email address and Tab.
3. Tab through each field, filling in the information as needed.
4. Once you’ve Tabbed to the Subject line, type a brief subject pertaining to the message.
5. Tab to the Message body and type your message.
6. when done, Tab to the Send button and Enter. You can also click on the Send button, if you prefer.

Replying to a Message.
1. Open a message, read it and click in the Quick Reply area.
2. type your reply and either click on the Send button or press the Tab key to move to the Send button and press Enter.

Surfing the internet - Google News

On the Google search page, you will find a link to the News page. this service offers current news articles for people and events.

1. Open the google search page.
2. JAWS users can either retrieve a list of links with Insert-F7 and search for the News link by pressing the letter N or you can use the Down Arrow until you hear the News link and Enter.

Mouse users can Click on the News link.

3. JAWS users press the letter E to move to the edit field, type a person's name or event and press Enter.

Mouse users should move to the edit search box, type in a person's name or an event and Click on the Search button.
4. Once the results are displayed, JAWS users should press the letter H to move through the articles, which are displayed as heading links.

Mouse users can click on the individual article links.

JAWS users: Remember that once you follow an article link, the page may not be as accessible as you might like. Use the letter H to check for headings or the letter N to move to any unlinked text.

Additionally,all users can use the Backspace key to return to the original page where they launched the article link.

2. Search for a video.
3. Open the video page.
4. If possible, stop the video from playing. JAWS users should try pressing the letter B until they hear Pause button and press the spacebar.
5. Press Alt-D to move to the Address Bar or click in the Address Bar.
6. Press Control-C to Copy the URL.
7. Open youtube-mp3.org.
8. Press the letter E to move to the Edit field. Mouse users click in the Edit field containing a sample URL.
9. Press Control-A to select the entire URL followed by the Delete key.
10. Press Control-V to paste a copy of the URL there.
11. Tab to the Download button and press Enter or Click on it.
The conversion process should begin.
12. Press the Down Arrow to hear the progress or completion of the process
13. Locate the Download link and save it to your local computer, usually the My Documents or Documents folder.

Sending a link to a web page:
1. Open the web page.
2. Move to the Address Bar with Alt-D or by Clicking in the Address Bar.
3. Press Control-C to activate the Copy command. You can also press the Right Mouse button and Choose Copy from the resulting list.
4. Open Gmail and the Compose Message link. Fill in all appropriate fields. Tab to the Message body or Click in this area and press Control-V to paste the URL there.
5. Arrow or Tab to the Send button and press Enter or spacebar. You can, of course, Click on the Send button.

Surfing the Internet - Adding a Web page to Your Startup List

The Google search page is a very popular Start Page for the Internet Explorer browser but you can have as many pages as you like open when you begin a session of IE7 and above.

1. Open the internet Explorer.
2. Press Alt-T to open the Tools menu or Click on the Tools menu.
3. Choose the Internet Options option by pressing the Up Arrow or Clicking on it.
4. You are in the edit field for the current start or home page addresses.
5. Press Control-End to move to the end of the list followed by the Enter key to move the cursor to a new line.
6. type an address such as http://www.amazon.com/access.
7. Tab or Shift-Tab to the Apply Button and press Enter or click on the Apply button.
8. Shift-Tab to the OK button and press Enter or Click on the OK button.
9. Press Alt-F4 to Close the Internet Explorer Browser. Reopen it and press Control-Tab to move to your newest Home or Start page.
